Virtual Book Study: "Teaching Climate Change"

Event Details

This 5-part virtual book study will support climate solution learning and community by engaging with a new resource: Teaching Climate Change by Mark Windschitl.

In response to student demands across the US and in Oregon, there is increasing urgency to engage students in climate learning and solutions. This book club is one piece of a larger puzzle, to support and facilitate educators' ability to collectively advance this ambitious and critical work.

Book Study details:

  • We will meet the second Tuesday of each month, from 4-5 pm (January-May) on Zoom
  • Focus audience is high school science teachers. We are especially hoping to include teachers in NGSS content areas (physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, space science, engineering)
  • Participants will earn up to 5 PDUs, with an option to apply for summer institute PDUs (see below)
  • At our March meeting, we will host book author Mark Windschitl (co-author of Ambitious Science Teaching)

This free opportunity, hosted by the Oregon Science Teachers Association with support from the Knowles Teacher Initiative, is focused on supporting high school science educators dedicated to improving classroom climate change learning experiences. With our Knowles Teacher Initiative funding, participants can request a free copy of the book in their registration survey.

You will:

  • Learn about fostering understanding, resilience, and a commitment to justice through teaching climate change.
  • Connect in subject-specific or “job-alike" breakout rooms to discuss how to reduce student climate anxiety and engage students in local climate solutions.

Summer institute eligibility: Participants in this book will be eligible to apply for a 3-day, all-expenses paid climate institute in Oregon. The summer climate institute is supported by a Knowles Teacher Initiative grant.
